Some guys are lucky Wang is chicken PDF Print E-mail

I'm not the fighting type. In my adult life - since I turned 18 that is, I haven't as much as raised an arm against anybody. It is not that people don't piss me off sometimes; it's just that I detest violence.

More truthfully, I'm a coward. The mere possibility that I might be humiliated by my opponent sends me scampering for safety at the slightest sign of trouble.

Even in my teenage days, I was not one for the boxing ring. I can only recall one incident when I threw caution to the wind and took on a fellow twice my size. The fact that he was totally zonked, of course, helped. As you would imagine, the point of dispute was a very serious one - a girl.

We had escaped from school with a bunch of girls to go to the disco in town. In the disco, some man picked an interest in one of the girls. Unfortunately for him, not only was Beth not interested, but I also happened to be in the running for her.

The ki-man was following the girl everywhere, pulling her to dance with him. Though she made it clear she wasn't interested, the ki-man wouldn't leave her alone. Time for Wang to stand up and be counted.

I jumped up and unleashed what I believed to be a very serious blow in the ki-man's face. As he was heavily drunk, I expected one blow to send him sprawling on the floor. To my surprise, the fellow remained standing.

I unleashed a second blow, which only seemed to make him soberer. I was about to turn and take to my heels when a friend stepped in and gave the stubborn ki-man a kick that sent him to the floor. I'm not too sure whether Beth was impressed or not. What I can say is that I didn't quite make it with her.

I was reminded of all this when, at a party last weekend, some guy was harassing a good friend of mine just like that ki-man many years ago.

The guy started off dancing with my friend, then he wanted to "squeeze" her. Who dances "squeeze" anymore, let alone on a Technotronic dance song?

Soon, the fellow was chasing my friend all over the place, begging to spend "just one night" with her. For a moment, I was tempted to unleash one of my rare blows on him, but I realised that he wasn't drunk and, more significantly, I didn't have any friends around to come to my rescue if things got out of hand.

In the end, my friend and I left the party early, just to save her from one of those guys who never get the point. If only God had endowed me with the courage...
